Starting From Scratch — No Experience Required

Learn to sew with confidence

If you’ve ever wanted to learn to sew but didn’t know where to start — this class is for you.

Our Beginner Sewing Course: Starting From Scratch is a supportive, hands-on course designed for absolute beginners. Over six guided class sessions, students learn the foundations of sewing while completing real, useful projects they’ll be proud to take home.

This is not a lecture-style class. Every session is practical, approachable, and paced to ensure students truly understand what they’re doing — and why they’re doing it.

What this course covers

Students begin with the basics and steadily build skills each week, gaining confidence with both their sewing machine and essential techniques.

Throughout the course, students will learn:

• Sewing machine anatomy and safety
• Threading the machine, winding bobbins, and changing needles
• Stitch selection, stitch length, tension, and backstitching
• Straight stitching and zigzag stitching
• Fabric types, grain, selvedge, and pre-washing
• Cutting fabric accurately using shears and rotary cutters
• Reading and using simple patterns
• Pressing, seam finishes, hems, and professional sewing habits
• Zippers, elastic casings, boxed corners, and embellishments
• Sewing buttonholes and attaching buttons by machine

Each new skill is reinforced through guided practice and real project construction.

Projects you'll complete

Students complete multiple beginner-friendly projects that reinforce core sewing skills:

• Tote Bag (with optional boxed corners and embellishments)
• Lined Zipper Pouch
• Microwave-Safe Bowl Cozy
• Hair Scrunchie
• Button and Buttonhole Skill Workshop

These projects are carefully selected to build skills progressively — no busywork, no filler.

Everything is included

You don’t need to bring anything except yourself.

All fabric, supplies, tools, patterns, and practice materials are provided as part of the course. Sewing machines are available for use during class.

Optional take-home kits may be available for students who want extra practice between sessions, but they are never required.

Supportive learning environment

Classes are intentionally kept small to ensure:

• Individual instruction
• Hands-on guidance
• Time for questions
• A relaxed, encouraging atmosphere

Whether you’re a teen, adult, homeschool student, or a family member learning together, you’ll feel supported every step of the way.

Student & family discount

We proudly support students and homeschool families.

Students receive a $20 discount, and the same $20 discount is extended to immediate family members who enroll as well.

To qualify, students must provide a current school ID or homeschool documentation at registration.

What you'll walk away with

By the end of the course, students will:

• Understand how to confidently use a sewing machine
• Know how to choose fabric and prepare it correctly
• Be able to follow patterns and complete beginner projects independently
• Have the skills needed to move on to more advanced sewing projects
• Take home multiple completed items — and the confidence to keep sewing

Students also receive curated resource links and project ideas to continue practicing after class.

What Our Students Say

Samantha F.

I came across ‘Crafted Keepsakes of Texas’ by accident and am SO glad I did! I did a free sublimation Waffle Weave Towel Workshop and then signed up for the Beginner Sewing Class. It has been such fun!

Cathey of ‘Crafted Keepsakes of Texas’ is kind, knowledgeable, and passionate about what she does. You will be glad you signed up for any of the workshops/classes she offers!

Ariel N.

I had the pleasure of meeting Cathey at a vendor fair and was so excited to learn that she offered sewing classes as it was something I’ve wanted to learn how to do. Signing up was easy! Reasonably priced for 6 weeks of learning and all material provided for me for her beginner sewing class. I looked forward to coming to class every single week and learning from Cathey. She is very knowledgeable and so kind. I made 4 projects in the course of 6 weeks and learned how to sew buttons and button holes. By week 3 I felt like I had learned enough to start on solo projects at home. I’m looking forward to taking other classes from Cathey and continuing my sewing journey. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to sew and learn it in an uncomplicated and fun way, sign up for her classes!

Molly M.

I loved this class and had ZERO experience going in.

Kathy creates an environment that is welcoming, encouraging, and fun, which made it so easy to jump in and learn. I walked away feeling confident, capable, and excited to keep going, which I did not expect. I am using everything I made and looking forward to taking the next session.

She breaks things down in a way that makes sewing feel approachable, while still pushing you just enough to grow. Her reminder that “it doesn’t have to be perfect to be perfectly acceptable” stuck with me and took a lot of pressure off.

Crystal M.

So thankful for having a wonderful group of ladies in attendance. I am very pleased with the instructions that I was given and the projects that I completed. Cathey East was patient and kind. She gave everyone the personal attention that was needed and continued to encourage everyone to maintain a positive outlook on any mistakes that were made.
